Leggendo i primi frammenti, avete forse pensato che il prossimo libro fosse di poesia, o filosofia, o un romanzo. Di certo arriveranno anche quelli, ma il libro di oggi è come dire… diverso. È “Giocati dal caso” di Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
È difficile definire il libro banalmente come di finanza, è ben altro. Penso sia invece altrettanto facile intuire i concetti che hanno cambiato la mia mente: la casualità della nostra esistenza e la sovrastimata idea che abbiamo di “quelli bravi“.
So che può sembrare strano, ma ciò mi ha dato un forte senso di tranquillità. L’idea che, indipendentemente da ciò che facciamo, sia il caso il più delle volte a decidere mi ha fatto dire: “E ALLORA ‘STI CAZZI!”
Viene introdotto per la prima volta il concetto di “cigno nero” con l’esempio del tacchino nel giorno del ringraziamento, ho scoperto poi il bias di sopravvivenza. Taleb mi ha fatto fare un importante bagno di umiltà intellettuale e mostrato la via più di un qualsiasi libro di filosofia. Più avanti, quando ho letto Camus, il mio cervello ha tracciato una sottile linea, ha collegato il tacchino di Taleb al Sisifo di Camus. Nessuno dei due ha scampo, quindi l’unica soluzione resta l’assurdo, il disprezzo verso il destino.
Non possiamo governare il caso e, così come “bisogna immaginare Sisifo felice”, così la nostra unica risposta al lancio di dadi che è la vita, è l’eleganza nel nostro comportamento, nella nostra reazione. Non lamentarsi come ribellione contro l’assurdo.

Reading the first few fragments, you might have thought the next book would be poetry, or philosophy, or perhaps a novel. Certainly, those will come, but today’s book is… how shall I put it… different. It is “Fooled by Randomness” by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
It is difficult to dismiss this book as merely about finance; it is so much more. It is, however, easy to grasp the concepts that changed my mind: the randomness of our existence and our overrated perception of “the successful ones.”
I know it may sound strange, but this gave me a profound sense of tranquility. The idea that, regardless of what we do, chance is most often the one deciding made me say: “SO WHAT, WHO CARES!”
It introduces for the first time the concept of the “Black Swan” through the example of the Thanksgiving turkey. I later discovered the survivorship bias. Taleb forced me into a necessary bath of intellectual humility, showing me the way more than any philosophy book ever could. Later, when I read Camus, my brain traced a thin line, it connected Taleb’s turkey to Camus’s Sisyphus. Neither has a way out, so the only solution remains the absurd, disdain for destiny.
We cannot govern chance and so, just as “one must imagine Sisyphus happy,” our only response to the roll of the dice that is life lies in the elegance of our behavior, in our reaction. Not complaining as a form of rebellion against the absurd.
