-E tu? Non sei sublime?

-No, io no.

It isn’t easy for me to write about this book; it is emotionally the most powerful one I have ever read.

After Taleb, Camus, the comics, I couldn’t help but talk about MODIGLIANI IL PRINCIPE by Angelo Longoni.

It always matters to me to make the usual disclaimer: this isn’t a review, just thoughts and feelings.

Inexplicably, despite having read it so many times, the book has kept the smell of the first day. It was a gift from my girlfriend, and perhaps that is part of what makes it so special. I have always had a particular fascination with Amedeo Modigliani, his works and his life. The novel, although not a biography, made me love the man behind the works; it made me love in the broadest sense of the word.

A book becomes influential in one’s life when it radically changes the way one sees the world:

Camus gave me awareness when facing adversity, Taleb gave me a more lucid view of the sequence of events, Diabolik showed me a whole world, later expanded by Manara, Spiegelman, Taniguchi.

Longoni, instead, made me fly gracefully, opened my heart to beauty, showed me love for art, for the beautiful, for the true. As I’ve said, I am not interested in carrying out an analysis, but, well, reading it, I understood, I felt that I was grasping something that before, perhaps, I didn’t even truly know. Amedeo, in the first person, shows us his weaknesses, his passions. The concept of the cursed artist, sometimes stereotypical, in the pages of this book transforms and expresses itself to its fullest potential. I admired the subversive spirit of Modì, the search for his own path, different from everyone else’s, the search for uniqueness. I learned love through Longoni, and the fact that the book was given to me by my beloved made everything more poetic. I dreamed of writing a script inspired by Longoni’s book, but I never felt completely up to it, who knows, maybe one day…

A small excerpt of a dialogue between Nina and Amedeo:

-Exactly. You don’t have to do anything to be sublime; just existing is enough. Think how lucky you are.

-And you? Aren’t you sublime?

-No, not me.

-Why?

-At most I could do something sublime, but doing doesn’t mean being.

-Modigliani, for a boy, you say things that are far too difficult.
