[ITA/ENG] Butō, Graphic Novel

[ITA]

Didascalia superiore: VIVA IL BELLO. VIVA L’ASSENZA DI CONTENUTO SUFFICIENTEMENTE MOSTRATA. VIVA IL BELLO IN OGNI SUA FORMA.

Vignetta 2:

Balloon Oizys: COSA NE PENSI DI QUESTA CITTÀ?
Balloon Davide: OLTRE AL FATTO CHE NON SIAMO PIÙ A MOCUIO?

Vignetta 2:
Balloon Oizys: OLTRE AL FATTO CHE NON SIAMO PIÙ A MOCUIO…
Balloon Davide: BEH, INTRIGANTE…

Vignetta 3:

Il testo: DIO PERDONO, SE SEMBRA NON PARLI PIÙ A TE, MA LA VERITÀ È CHE PROPRIO DA TE CERCO RISPOSTE.

DIO PERD-
ONO, SE
SEMBRA
NON PA-
RLI PIÙ
A TE, M-
A LA VE-
RITÀ È

Tavola 49:

Vignetta 1:
Tipo di inquadratura: Figura intera Oizys.
Descrizione scena: Solo l’ombra di Oizys, gesticola ancora. I due continuano a camminare nella città.
Balloon Oizys: E CHE VORREBBE DIRE?

Vignetta 2:
Balloon Davide (fuoricampo): ‘STO PALAZZO BIANCO SI SVILUPPA A PERDITA D’OCCHIO, È STRANO…
Balloon Davide (fuoricampo): IPNOTICO!
Balloon Oizys (fuoricampo e dalla parte opposta): IPNOTICO DÀ?

Vignetta 3:
Tipo di inquadratura: Figura intera Davide.
Descrizione scena: Solo l’ombra di Davide, gesticola ancora. I due continuano a camminare nella città.
Balloon Davide: SI, MI SEMBRA DI ESSERE UN ALIENO IN UNA CITTÀ COSÌ ESTRANIANTE, DIVERSA…

Vignetta 4:
Tipo di inquadratura: Mezzo primo piano Oizys.
Descrizione scena: Solo l’ombra di Oizys, gesticola ancora. I due continuano a camminare nella città.
Balloon Oizys: È QUALCOSA DI VAGAMENTE PROFONDO…

Vignetta 5:
Tipo di inquadratura: Mezzo primo piano Davide.
Descrizione scena: Solo l’ombra di Davide, gesticola ancora. I due continuano a camminare nella città.
Balloon Davide: IO SO COSA STAI FACENDO!

After re-reading my last fragment, I found myself thinking about the Butō dance. So, having finished my usual 30-minute rapid game (which I lost miserably by the way), I searched for the dance company Sankai Juku on YouTube. The elegance of their performances is unique. I highly recommend checking them out, and I’ll take this opportunity to share a few pages from my script. It is intentionally a decontextualized excerpt: you don’t have the plot, you don’t know the characters. My interest, beyond the poetry, is simply to share a bit of what I do.

Page 47

Panel 1
Shot: Extreme Wide Shot, Bird’s-eye view.
Description: Mistero e malinconia di una strada by G. De Chirico (1914), except instead of the girl, we see Davide and Oizys venturing forth (they are in the same proportions as the girl in the master’s painting). The accelerated perspective creates a sense of unease, of vertigo, disturbing the reader. The perspective and the “wrong geometry” serve to create a sense of disorientation: we feel as if we were in a familiar place that, however, we no longer recognize. The painting describes the feeling of being out of place in a location intentionally made for man. The human being disappearing into the discomfort of the urban scene.
Top Caption: LONG LIVE BEAUTY. LONG LIVE THE ABSENCE OF CONTENT SUFFICIENTLY DISPLAYED. LONG LIVE BEAUTY IN ALL ITS FORMS.

Panel 2
Shot: Detail shot of Oizys and Davide’s feet, in profile.
Description: Shot from the floor, we see the feet of the two walking hesitantly in the great square.

Page 48

Panel 1
Shot: Wide Shot.
Description: We see the shadows of Oizys and Davide exceptionally elongated, we see the two as if they were exiting the panel on the far right. In the upcoming panels of the city, we will instead exclusively see the shadows, precisely to emphasize the disorientation and the feeling of being mannequins or objects within the city. Consequently, the balloons point to the shadows and not the characters.
Balloon Oizys: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THIS CITY?
Balloon Davide: BESIDES THE FACT THAT WE’RE NOT IN MOCUIO ANYMORE?

Panel 2
Shot: Full body shot, Oizys.
Description: The shadows of Oizys and Davide, still very elongated and “unreal,” gesticulate to emphasize what they are saying.
Balloon Oizys: BESIDES THE FACT THAT WE’RE NOT IN MOCUIO ANYMORE…
Balloon Davide: WELL, INTRIGUING…

Panel 3
Text only, with an important peculiarity. A syllabic enjambment with arbitrary syllable breaking. The effect is to create a broken, anxious rhythm that forces the reader to slow down and reconstruct the meaning. Reading becomes laborious, as if the speaker were crying or short of breath.

The text: GOD, FORGIVE ME, IF IT SEEMS I NO LONGER SPEAK TO YOU, BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT I SEEK ANSWERS PRECISELY FROM YOU. GOD FORGIVE ME IF SOMETIMES I HATE MYSELF, I DO NOT RESPECT MY BODY, I DO NOT RESPECT MY SOUL. GOD FORGIVE ME, HAVE MERCY.
To give a concrete idea, here are the first words:

GOD, FORG-
IVE, IF
IT SE-
EMS I
NO LON-
GER SP-
EAK TO
YOU, B-

Page 49

Panel 1
Shot: Full body shot, Oizys.
Description: Only Oizys’s shadow, still gesticulating. The two continue to walk through the city.
Balloon Oizys: AND WHAT’S THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN?

Panel 2
Shot: Wide shot of a white building.
Description: We see the white building from their perspective.
Balloon Davide (off-panel): THIS WHITE BUILDING JUST STRETCHES OUT AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE, IT’S WEIRD…
Balloon Davide (off-panel): HYPNOTIC!
Balloon Oizys (off-panel, on the other side): HYPNOTIC, DÀ?

Panel 3
Shot: Full body shot, Davide.
Description: Only Davide’s shadow, still gesticulating. The two continue to walk through the city.
Balloon Davide: YES, I FEEL LIKE AN ALIEN IN A CITY SO ALIENATING, SO DIFFERENT…

Panel 4
Shot: Medium Close-Up, Oizys.
Description: Only Oizys’s shadow, still gesticulating.
Balloon Oizys: IT’S SOMETHING VAGUELY PROFOUND…

Panel 5
Shot: Medium Close-Up, Davide.
Description: Only Davide’s shadow, still gesticulating. The two continue to walk through the city.
Balloon Davide: I KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING!
