Ho giร affrontato in parte il tema in โWe used to be magicians on the boardโ, sotto perรฒ una luce differente, non voglio dunque parlare nuovamente di maghi e stregoni, ma dellโapproccio attuale al mondo dei computer scacchistici.
Grandi scacchisti come Nakamura e Carlsen spesso usano โlinee inferioriโ sorprendendo lโavversario e portandolo in territori inesplorati.

In 1997 Deep Blue beat the reigning world champion Garry Kasparov, setting a milestone in the history of the game and perhaps far beyond the game itself. Later, other chess engines have outclassed Deep Blue itself and have become indisputably stronger than humans. On Wikipedia, the estimated Elo rating of Stockfish is 3653, far higher than the best “human” rating, Magnus Carlsen’s 2882.
I have already partly addressed the theme in โWe used to be magicians on the boardโ, though in a different light, so I do not want to talk about magicians and sorcerers again, but about the current approach to the world of chess engines.
The chess community’s response to Kasparov’s defeat was a return to the past, rediscovering openings like the Italian Game. Much like my own reaction, unwitting and proud (Kingโs Gambit).
Stockfish plays perfect, impeccable chess, but what’s the point of copying it? How beautiful it is, instead, to return to sacrifices, to beautiful play, to those that today have become the “inferior lines.”
Great chess players like Nakamura and Carlsen often use “inferior lines,” surprising the opponent and bringing them into uncharted territory.
Another response has been to take a fresh look at Chess960, now called Freestyle Chess, thus seeking to make randomness essential and keep the game from becoming monotonous. The concept is certainly fascinating and today, more than ever, it is growing rapidly, with very prestigious tournaments.
Using the computer for analysis is undoubtedly interesting; it can lead to conclusions that are sometimes even startling, uncovering a certain aptitude for a particular style. Indeed, there is not always just one “right move”; the position on the board is clear, crystalline, which paradoxically makes the choice more complex. It is in that moment, with your decision, that you show who you are.
Every move is an indicator of risk tolerance, priorities, and vulnerability. Although everything is “predicted” by the computer, a variation of ours can reveal a lot. Reuben Fine, in his book โThe Psychology of the Chess Playerโ associates the king with the father figure.
In chess, according to Fine, one thus wants to defeat one’s own symbolic father, defending oneself as a child.
This leads to an important distinction the author draws between two types of players: the first is rebellious: attacking and sacrificing; the second is defensive: building, avoiding risk, consolidating. This reveals diametrically opposed relationships to authority, a difference between those who want to “kill” the father and those who have difficulty separating from him.
Certainly, chess engines have the solution, but it isn’t always the right one for us.
