Sta per finire il Torneo dei Candidati e non potevo esimermi dall’esprimere qualche riflessione a riguardo.
Prima però mi interessava parlare di un concetto già nominato nel primo frammento: l’uso dei computer scacchistici. Ho visto un po’ di settimane fa uno shorts di YouTube con un’intervista a Magnus Carlsen, parla di come prima gli scacchisti fossero “maghi“ della scacchiera, oggi però il trucco è mostrato agli occhi di tutti, rendendo il gioco più freddo, asettico. Certo sono innegabile gli innumerevoli vantaggi che i computer abbiano portato al mondo degli scacchi, e la crescita degli ultimi anni ne è chiaro segno, ma ecco, la cosa è molto più complessa di così. Quando ero piccolo amavo i trucchi di magia, ma poi improvvisamente ho smesso, semplicemente per lo stesso motivo descritto da Carlsen nell’intervista.
Preferisco ignorare il trucco e godermi la magia. Continuerò a giocare f4 dopo 1. e4, e5 perché la magia resti viva in me.
Riguardo il torneo più importante dell’anno, sta svolgendo al termine e senza troppi giri di parole, posso dire con certezza che tifo solamente per due giocatori: Divya Deśmukh e Fabiano Caruana. Divya per come è arrivata ai Candidati, la sua conquista del titolo di GM, e perché banalmente ho una forte simpatia per lei. Fabiano, invece, perché più di chiunque altro merita di entrare nell’Olimpo dei Campioni del Mondo e perché anche per lui ho una forte simpatia.
Purtroppo nessuno dei due vincerà il torneo. Ma il tifo è anche questo, qualcosa di inspiegabile e incondizionato.

The Candidates Tournament is drawing to a close, and I could not refrain from expressing some reflections on the matter.
First, however, I was interested in discussing a concept already mentioned in the first fragment: the use of chess computers. A few weeks ago, I saw a YouTube short featuring an interview with Magnus Carlsen; he speaks of how chess players used to be “magicians” of the board, but today the trick is exposed for all to see, making the game colder, aseptic. Certainly, the countless advantages that computers have brought to the chess world are undeniable, and the growth of recent years is a clear sign of it, but well, it is much more complex than that. When I was a child, I loved magic tricks, but then I suddenly stopped, simply for the same reason described by Carlsen in the interview. I prefer to ignore the trick and enjoy the magic.
I will continue to play f4 after 1. e4, e5 so that the magic stays alive within me.
Regarding the most important tournament of the year, it is coming to an end and, to put it bluntly, I can say with certainty that I am only rooting for two players: Divya Deśmukh and Fabiano Caruana. Divya for how she reached the Candidates, her achievement of the GM title, and because, quite simply, I have a strong affinity for her. Fabiano, on the other hand, because more than anyone else he deserves to enter the Olympus of World Champions, and because I have a strong affinity for him too.
Unfortunately, neither of them will win the tournament. But being a fan is also this, something inexplicable and unconditional.
