I started writing when I was very little; I remember it was around the end of elementary school (I think I was 8). I made a little comic “inspired” by Dragon Ball. Actually, the only things I read at that time were Topolino (the Italian Mickey Mouse comic) and Geronimo Stilton. Who knows why I have this fascination with mice.
For a few years I stopped reading, and consequently I stopped writing. Then, one day, in a shopping mall I bought (I was about 16 years old) Walter Isaacson’s biography of Steve Jobs. It was the turning point; it could be added to the books that changed my life, sure, but not for the book itself, so much as for what came after. I got back into reading in earnest: “grown-up stuff,” I thought. This, however, made me completely blind to the opportunities I had. Only essays, few novels and zero comics. Because deep down they are kids’ stuff… I think this last statement is interesting because, alas, it is much more common than one might think.
Anyway, perhaps we will return to this later. Alongside reading I started writing again. Actually, between the ages of 8 and 16, I did occasionally write something: I tried to write poems, but in a RAP style. I never intended to become a rapper; it was simply the only form of writing I knew. I gradually drifted away from that form of writing, moving on to poems that accompanied my entire adolescence.
Around the age of 19 I felt a strong need: poems are part of me and always will be, but I needed stories, to narrate, to create worlds. This need was born in conjunction (I don’t think it’s a coincidence) with reading my first comics. I started again, after Topolino of course, with Diabolik. Then my mind opened and now I mostly read graphic novels. The fascination with mice, ironically, has remained, with Art Spiegelman’s great masterpiece, Maus.
Writing followed this trend, so I started writing scripts. To be honest, I threw away a lot of my early work, as I did before with my poems. An entire collection of 130 pages, other stories of varying length and a 120-page graphic novel. But I don’t make a big deal of it; I believe it’s part of this incredible journey that led me to a trilogy of graphic novels that I now love very much. It led me to many new ideas and to this new project: the BLOG.
Publishing is something that fascinates me, but that I don’t crave, at least not for now. My greatest terror is having to stain my works, to make them lose their authenticity. I need, perhaps, only time to reflect, to write more.
