Going back a bit, re-reading the last fragment, I realized I needed to go into more detail on the subject of comics. As already mentioned, I started reading comics again with Diabolik, and the “King of Terror” fascinated me right from the start. Without, however, taking anything away from the works of the Giussani sisters, to whom I am immensely grateful, I felt I wanted something different, though I didn’t know exactly what.
I really want to make an important clarification: no one I know (neither in my family nor among my friends) reads comics. My journey was therefore a bit, how shall I put it, blind.
That being said, almost by chance, after Diabolik, I discovered Manara.
Milo Manara split my soul open; it was exactly what I needed at that moment. I read everything I could find, and I fell in love with a very recent work of his: Caravaggio. As I’ve said before, I have no expertise for a review, and I’m not even interested in simply discussing the plot. It would be enough to say that the Maestro’s pages tell an uncompromising, unique story. They tell of a timeless beauty, of a heartbreaking end…
That’s when I understood that my world would be comics, “sequential art.” After Manara, I discovered other classics: Moore with his V for Vendetta and Will Eisner’s A Contract with God, by way of Gipi, Zerocalcare, and Igort.
When it comes to Igort, I believe it would take an entire book to describe how important he has been to my development, both through his works (I eagerly await Numbers, volume two) and through his important work of popularization. For a “young samurai of storytelling” without a guide, Igort was a master, the one who showed me the way. I don’t want to list all the comics I’ve read; there wouldn’t be enough space, and I don’t think it’s very interesting; I just wanted to go deeper into the matter of comics and let my ideas breathe.
Every day I give thanks for having discovered this world, because it saved my soul.
Every day I give thanks to the Giussani sisters, Moore, Manara, Igort, and all the other figures of the comics world who warm my heart.
